CAFTA
The Central American -Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) passed the US House of Representatives and US Senate in July 2005. As of October 2007, CAFTA has been ratified in every CAFTA country. El Salvador implemented CAFTA on March 1, 2006 .
SHARE is collaborating with Salvadoran groups to monitor the effects of CAFTA on the rural sector and to share these effects with policy-makers, colleagues, and the SHARE grassroots base. Click here to read the report on CAFTA in its second year.
SHARE lifts up the words of Archbishop Oscar Romero to guide our CAFTA-oriented work today: "Our world in El Salvador is not an abstraction. The poor are the ones who tell us what the world is." We believe that the organized poor of Central America will “tell us what the world is,” and in so doing, guide our work to create policies that support the Salvadoran rural sector.
SHARE pledges our continued solidarity to the people of El Salvador , believing that with CAFTA in place, international collaboration will be critical in promoting sustainable development. SHARE and its grassroots base have walked with the poor majority of El Salvador as they opposed CAFTA, and we will continue to accompany them in future struggles. Please continue to join us.
