CAFTA Update
CAFTA Expected to Go to a Vote This Week!
A vote on CAFTA has been tentatively scheduled for a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives this Wednesday, July 27th, but is more likely to be held on Thursday or Friday. Every single vote will count: this agreement will be decided by just a handful of votes. As of now, CAFTA supporters do not have the votes they need to pass the agreement, but that situation could change quickly.
It is due to your phone calls, faxes, emails, and letters to Members of Congress, as well as your letters to the editors, that CAFTA supporters have been unable to pass the agreement. This is a victory in and of itself and is a testament to the commitment of people throughout the U.S. and Central America who have reflected, evaluated, and conducted education on CAFTA.
A different trade agreement is possible, one that makes the needs of the poorest people a priority. Our Members of Congress need to hear the values of people of faith, and of those who walk with the people of El Salvador, before making their decision.
