March 9 – 16, 2002
El Salvador March 12, 2002 we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the martyrdom of Father Rutilio Grande, SJ, assassinated for defending the rights of the peasants of El Salvador. See pictures of the delegation that went to El Salvador FATHER RUTILIO GRANDE AND ALL THE MARTYRS: PRESENTE! Father Rutilio Grande, a Jesuit priest organizing with the sugar cane peasants of Aguilares, was assassinated together with two companions on March 12, 1977. This assassination marked an escalation of the repression by the military of El Salvador against those who challenged government policies. Father Rutilio worked with base communities and analyzed the conditions of poverty within the context of the Gospels. His assassination, as well as his personal witness to social justice through his life and work, had a tremendous impact on the newly appointed Archbishop Oscar Romero. Tilo, as he was called, was loved by the Salvadoran campesino communities due to his humility and respect for the poor farmers and their families--not only as humans, but also as el pueblo de Dios, the People of God. LA LUCHA CONTINUA –THE STRUGGLE FOR PEACE CONTINUES Join the Salvadoran celebration in honor of Father Rutilio Grande and
All The Martyrs.
