MORE ABOUT LOURDES PALACIOS

Lourdes is the Undersecretary of Participation, Transparency and Anti-Corruption of the Presidency of the Republic of El Salvador. She is a former congresswoman and member of the Governing Body of El Salvador’s National Assembly. As a congresswoman Lourdes was an active promoter of the environment and a national law for water rights, issues important in a country in which the lack of previous public policy on these issues has resulted in environmental deterioration, deforestation and contaminated water.

In the 1980s, Lourdes worked shoulder to shoulder with community organizations like CRIPDES and CORDES in the repopulation and reconstruction of the country following the Peace Accords. She pushed forward the reconstruction of houses, streets, and community centers, and worked for the improvement of water, health, education and agricultural production systems. She especially focused on the strengthening of community organizing. She is the co-founder of three Salvadoran organizations that work for the recognition of water and food as human rights, the reduction of inequality, and the strengthening of citizen action around health rights.

Lourdes is also the president of the Secretariat for Women of the FMLN. In cooperation with Equipo Maiz and SHARE, she is leading a three-month leadership seminar for 30 women from across the country. The goal is to strengthen women’s skills to take on leadership roles in the private and public sector, and to run for office as city councilmembers, mayors, and congresswomen.

Lourdes has travelled to many countries to learn about their community development programs. She recently travelled to Vietnam where she compared the experiences of El Salvador after the wars and established relationships for bringing the experience of Vietnam to El Salvador.

Her current participation in this tour of the United States is dedicated to the promotion of solidarity with the women of El Salvador. She is interested in meeting with community leaders, with women in office, and with people who are interested in sharing their experiences and resources with the people of El Salvador.
