Join us in Celebrating the 25th Anniversary
of the Martyrs

This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow.
We water the seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.
We lay foundations that will need further development.
We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities.
Prayer of Archbishop Romero.

We would like to invite both new and long-term friends of El Salvador to join us in celebrating 25 years of solidarity with the people of El Salvador.

We want to remember Monseñor Romero, Ita, Maura, Jean, Dorothy and all the martyrs and say Presente (Present). We want to remember our martyrs alive in the communities they worked with, advancing the organizing for justice and human rights improving the conditions and challenging the policies of death.

Over the next two years (2004 and 2005), our plan is to reach out to new people that do not know these martyrs and perhaps were not even alive in the early 1980’s. We want to invite local leaders that have been involved in the solidarity movement with El Salvador to tell their stories, share the history of the martyrs and transmit their spirit to get people on fire to continue with the struggle for life at least another 25 years of solidarity

One of our goals is to resist the unfair Central American Free Trade Agreement. We also want to organize large delegations to El Salvador for the anniversary of the Martyrs assassinations on March 24 and December 2nd, 2005 to commemorate the lives of the martyrs and experience why it is important to remember them. Lastly, we are launching a campaign to raise $250,000 for local development projects and $250,000 for women’s empowerment projects. As Monseñor Romero used to say, “Everybody can do something” and with this quote we invite individuals and communities across the US to do something to celebrate the anniversaries.

SHARE’s Program Overview

This year SHARE’s Grassroots and Advocacy programs will join hands to foster “grassroots” globalization. Facilitating relationships between people and communities in the U.S. and El Salvador, we hope to further efforts with promote economic and social justice. Together with the MPR-12, SHARE’s newest advocacy partner in El Salvador, whose members include CRIPDES Sistering communities, we will work to defeat the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). In CAFTA’s wake, we will continue our long time efforts of advancing dynamic and just economic relationships between our countries.

  • The Local Development Program of the SHARE Foundation provides grants, advocacy support and technical assistance (i.e. help developing work plans, business plans, writing proposals and reports, tracking of grant monies, evaluations and outreach) to Salvadoran organizations. The local development projects that SHARE support contain three integrating principles as outlined in our 2002-2006 strategic plan; they are women’s empowerment, citizen participation and leadership development.

  • SHARE invests in building relationships of cooperation and solidarity with the Salvadoran American community in the US. We enlist Salvadorans to join committees and delegations, as well as be involved in advocacy and fundraising activities.

  • We encourage you to organize events during the month of March in your community to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Romero and the martyrs.
The events can take many shapes and forms, including a “teach in”, a “cena tipica” (typical dinner) with friends and family, a cultural performance, the showing of a movie, a dance, a web site with a chat room, etc. For example, in New York the Salvadoran committee celebrates a Romero Week every year from March 21-24.
