In the women’s area (230 women participating in 48 community women’s committees), there is special focus given to increasing knowledge of rights and other issues, thereby permitting the practice of full citizenship, free of discrimination or marginalization. The youth organizing (135 youth participating in 28 community youth committees) focuses primarily on the building of new leaders with a vision for change and based on the values of solidarity, cooperation, equity, and pride in cultural identity.

While project activities are being executed in seven northeastern municipalities of Chalatenango, with a total of 14,890 residents, approximately 20,000 additional residents of neighboring municipalities are indirectly benefiting from this project as well. Project components include: 1) Education (14 informational municipal assemblies, an international gathering in Honduras where mining experiences are more advanced, and community trainings including theater performances), 2) Strengthening of Alliances (Participation in the National Working Group Against Mining, Radio Sumpul promotional spots, t-shirts and promotional materials, and two strategic petitions with support from mayors, citizens, and other local actors), and 3) Administrative Support (promoter, gas, and office costs).

Amount: $8530.18

Duration: 1 September 2005 – 28 February 2007 (extended end date)
