UCRES Region

“Here at UCRES, we try to define our work by following the path that Romero left for us, and following his principles as well. We believe that Romero is the Saint of El Salvador and Central America. The history that he left us will never be forgotten; its one of our responsibilities as an organization to teach new generations about his legacy, to remember and honor the struggle that he made to defend the poor. Monseñor worked to make change in the people, and he achieved this.” Alex Torres, UCRES President 2009-2011

The Union of Rural Communites of Northern San Salvador and La Libertad (UCRES) works with 39 communities in Northern San Salvador and La Libertad departments, specifically in the municipalities of San Pablo Tacachico, El Paisnal, Aguilares, and Guazapa. UCRES was founded in March of 1991, when refugees and displaced communities living in the neighboring countries of Honduras and Nicaragua and in other areas of El Salvador decided to return to their places of origin. UCRES became the representative of these communities, which organized to advocate for respect for civil and political rights and to work for development throughout the region.

Today, UCRES fosters community organization to increase problem-solving capacity for issues facing communities, the region, and the country. Of primary concern are the lack of access to resources, basic services, infrastructure, employment opportunities, and participation in decision-making structures. UCRES works in the following areas:
  • Community organizing and advocacy
  • Youth development
  • Popular Education
  • Women’s development
  • Health
  • Human Rights
  • Sistering
  • Preserving Historical Memory

SHARE currently supports two projects with UCRES: Rural Women’s Empowerment and Education and Youth Organization.
Thanks to the following Grassroots Partners for their ongoing accompaniment of communities in the UCRES region: St Elizabeth Ann Seton WI, Good Shepherd KS, Eastern Michigan University, St Francis Regis, the Northwest School.
