Education does not transform the World. Education changes People. People change the World." --Paulo Freire
Since its foundation in 1981 SHARE has supported both formal and informal education. During El Salvador’s civil war, SHARE accompanied young people living in refugee camps and the conflict zones, offering them classes under trees, in the remains of bombed out buildings, and in the corner of the churches where they took refuge.
Following the war in 1994, SHARE formalized the Rev Gus Schultz Scholarship program. Its aim was to support young community leaders of scarce financial resources who lived in rural areas so that they could complete their High School and College studies. The scholarships were seen as investments in the future leadership of local communities. Students came from the regions of Chalatenango, San Vicente, La Libertad and San Salvador. We have been blessed over the years with the generous support of many friends of El Salvador and the Salvadoran community in the US who have continued these investments. Notably, since 2006 Paul L. Kendall and Sharon K. Rives have offered full university scholarships to young people who have been identified as having significant leadership potential and who have demonstrated a commitment to their communities. Now they are underwriting the construction of a University Student Residence building to provide students who live a great distance from San Salvador with safe and attractive accommodations during their school week. SHARE also supports youth in both El Salvador and Honduras with cultural programs. These include developing dance and theater groups, creating peace-marching bands, teaching guitar and other musical instruments, and emphasizing healthy diets. We are proud to have supported hundreds of students in their educational pursuits over the past 40 years, and we celebrate their high graduation rates and dedication to their communities. The results are impressive. Many are now teachers, social workers, nurses, agronomists, business administrators and accountants who work or volunteer in local and national organizations. All are role models for the girls and boys of their communities. SHARE expresses its deep gratitude to CRIPDES, to the students, their parents, their communities, and the donors for their dedication and commitment over the past four decades to supporting the education that has made possible the betterment of communities and the country. Taken together, this work has contributed not only to building empowered individuals and stronger communities but also has provided an attractive alternative to the gang membership and related violence that plague the country. |

SHARE's Scholars
Since 1994, SHARE has promoted and coordinated scholarship programs for young leaders of scarce resources in rural areas. SHARE started this program with the aim of supporting young leaders to carry out their intermediate and university studies in the departments of Chalatenango, San Vicente, La Libertad and San Salvador. In 25 years of support we have seen the success in this support, hundreds of young boys and girls have completed their high school studies and a good number have culminated their university careers.
Some of our scholars, past and present ones, would like to thank you and tell you a little bit about themselves.
These are some videos from them.
