Invitation to join the Planting Seeds of Hope Delegation to El Salvador.
Draught, Migration and Caring for Mother Earth.

June 29th to July 8th 2024

Our earth is in crisis. The impacts of climate change are everywhere:  floods, fires, and extreme weather events are pummeling the earth.  Lives are lost, and communities are destroyed.

In El Salvador, long-term drought has ravaged the land, impacting food production and, by extension, food security across the country. hardest hit is eastern El Salvador, which is part of the Dry Corridor that runs through Central America.

Farmers can no longer cultivate their land. They plant their seeds with the first rains only to have the drought kill their corn, beans, and vegetables. After several years of losing their crops, they are compelled to abandon their farms and migrate to the city where they cannot find work. With no alternative ways to support their loved ones, they are compelled to undertake the treacherous journey to the United States. Their survival and the survival of their families are at stake.

We are all citizens of Planet Earth, and there is no other place we can go.” “Climate change is a political choice.” “This is not just about the environment, it's about the community, it's about jobs, it's about justice"  R. K. Pchauri, former chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Accompanying the People, Planting Seeds of Hope

From June 29-July 8, 2024, you are invited to join the SHARE Foundation delegation to El Salvador.  Our purpose is to stand with communities seeking to recover and care for the land and their communities, plant fruit trees and put a vision of ecological justice into practice.

We will examine the issues of drought, food insecurity, migration, and the moral and theological imperatives that ground our actions.

Together with the women of Chalatenango (CCR/CRIPDES), who for several years have been promoting The Seeds of Hope campaign and Green Fairs with their communities, we will study the signs of the times and explore strategies to address the myriad of challenges and opportunities.

Delegates will learn about the CCR women’s emphasis on Educacion y Practica with women, girls, and boys to raise awareness to save our Madre Tierra.

In partnership with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation (ftpf.org) and the Confederation of Agrarian Reform Cooperatives (CONFRAS), our SHARE delegation will plant fruit trees in public spaces like schools, riverbanks, and cooperative lands to produce food for the community.  We will transport young trees and plant and water a new generation of native fruit trees.

The benefits of planting trees are multiple, including offsetting the drought across the Dry Corridor, generating oxygen, producing fruits to eat and to sell to the community, and teaching children how to care for Madre Tierra and each other. By creating food security and community, we directly support the principle of “the right to remain” in one’s homeland!

We will actively participate in a Green Fair organized by the women of Chalatenango, where the tortillas will be green, the drink will be green, the rice and vegetables will be green, and where we will learn how to create home gardens in our own homes and communities and even eat green and healthy!

The delegation costs $1,185; we are inviting donations to give partial scholarships to low-income delegates and support the Seeds of Hope Campaign.

The traveling dates to and from San Salvador airport (SAL) are June 28 and July 8th.

We invite you to Plant Seeds of Hope with us by:
  1. Joining the delegation and/or sponsoring a delegate.
  2. Joining the Organizing Committee, which will be meeting the second Wednesday of every month.
  3. Hosting a visit from the women of Chalatenango in your city in the Spring of 2025
  4. Help organize the 45th anniversary delegation to celebrate the lives of Ita, Maura, Dorothy, and Jean in December 2025.
  5. Raising funds to support the women of Chalatenango with their Seed of Hope Campaign and planting fruit trees with CONFRAS.
