Sister Parish Program

In 1986 SHARE founded its Sister Parishes program as a way to promote solidarity between churches in the States and churches and communities in El Salvador. The first Sister Parish relationships were between churches in the U.S and the Urban San Salvador parishes of Maria Madre de los Pobres in La Chacra, San Francisco de Asis in Mejicanos and San Roque. As refugees began to repopulate rural communities in Northern El Salvador, parishes in the U.S. were sistered with them to accompany them in the repopulation and reconstruction. Throughout the years, parishes visit their sistering church or community in El Salvador on delegations and sponsored tours of Salvadorans from their sistering community to travel to the States. Eventually this program evolved into our current Grassroots Partnership program where schools and organizations as well as churches are partnered with a CRIPDES region in El Salvador to accompany their sustainable development. Read more about Grassroots partnerships.
